How to Make Cold-Brewed Iced Tea

Updated on

The temperature in the San Francisco Bay Area reached over 100 degrees F (38 C) yesterday so we planned ahead by making some cold-brewed iced tea overnight.

Here’s the recipe.

Glass jars with water and tea leaves

First, get some high-quality, loose-leaf tea. It can be black tea, green tea, or oolong tea. For regular iced tea, we use Earl Grey or a breakfast tea blend. We also like oolong tea iced. For an iced green tea, try using a gunpowder green.

The ratio we use is about 1 heaping teaspoon for every cup (8 oz) of water. Put cold water in a jar and add the tea. Cover the jars and place them in the refrigerator for 8 to 12 hours.

Here are three jars of tea. There are two jars of Earl Grey and one of oolong in the middle.

When it’s done, strain out the tea leaves and serve. Put the extra tea back in the refrigerator.
